Adopt the Arts got started when my friend and neighbor Abby Berman, a mom with two kids at a school in my neighborhood, came to me with the hopes of doing a fundraiser for the school. She explained to me that the budget for art and music was being slashed and the kids were suffering.
I went up to the school to see for myself and was shocked. Basically, there was no music program and from year to year the school didn’t know if it would be able to offer art or dance or theater. I found out that about 50% of the 535 elementary schools in LA School District don’t have music and art classes. We decided to do something about it.
Adopt the Arts is raising $85,000 to "adopt" 1 school. Baca Elementary, Figueroa Street Elementary and Van Ness Elementary are 3 LA public schools that need financial help to ensure that the kids in these schools get music and art programs they deserve. $85,000 will allow us to adopt 1 of these schools. We are hoping, with your help we can adopt 2 or even all of these 3 schools.
We have developed a curriculum that focuses on music theory, vocal music and world music. The kids also learn how to play modern band instruments. When we adopt a school we fix up a designated room. Paint it cool colors and put a carpet in.
We donate 30 guitars, 3 bass guitars, 10 keyboards, 2 drum kits, and microphones. AND the school gets a designated music teacher - we pay the salary.
We have already donated over 1,000 instruments to 25 LAUSD elementary schools, and we are looking to adopt as many schools as we can so that the kids get the education they deserve. You don’t have to have your own kids to get it. Jane Lynch gets it. And I don’t have my own kids, but I know that when I was a kid I would have been lost without music at school.
That's why we need YOUR help. Any & every little bit counts plus you'll get some very cool rewards from me, Jane & my friends. So check them out & contribute now! And please share this campaign with your friends. Let's spread the word!
